Applications from fall 2026

You are invited to take part in the 9th edition, which will be running in winter term 2027. The regular teaching in winter term 2027 will (probably) start last week of September, but the first field courses are scheduled from mid-September. The Field Ecology will be held in south Moravia from Sunday September 12, and the field part of Community Ecology (not obligatory to accomplish the course, but useful) even earlier. The new edition of the module “Quantitative Ecology” will be taught at the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia, České Budějovice, Czech Republic. The module was given, for the first time, in the winter term 2011, next editions in winter terms of odd years (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025) and it will be open again in the winter term 2027 (late September to January). We invite Master and PhD students aiming to learn updated concepts and methodologies for quantitative ecology studies. Because we have just limited capacity, it might be necessary to select the participants, if there will be too many applicants (it has never happend yet for those who applied before the deadline). For this reason, we need to have your application before April 10 - later applications will be accepted only when there is a space. We have selected ten main courses, all taught in English, that form the core of the module. The courses are focused on both, the ecological theory and the analysis and interpretation of ecological data using modern computational approaches. We have also a course focused on writing and publishing scientific papers (usually resulting in a colective publication). Read the Behing the paper section of the Vegetation Science Blog post about writing the Pan et al. 2024 paper and post about writing the Habencyus et al. 2024 paper. Most of the courses are taught weekly, through the whole semester. This edition will start again (for those interested, not obligatorily for all) with the Field Ecology course (from September 12). In the week before (probably, exact time under negotiations), we will have a field part of practicals for the Community Ecology course (recommended for those enrolled in Community Ecology, but if you do not managed, no problem). The module will be run concurrently with the Master program in Ecology taught in English, so we hope to have large international community here.

A flyer of the course is available in order for you to announce more easily this module to interested students.
